Tips for Maintaining a Secure Warehouse

Posted on 16/05/2017

At any one time, a large part of a company’s stock will be in housed in its warehouse. Criminals have worked this out and so-called ‘cargo-crime’ is on the increase. Taking a few simple steps to ensure your store rooms are properly secured will go a long way towards protecting valuable company assets. Here are our tips for maintaining warehouse security.

  • Require visitors to sign in. Some security measures are just common sense. You should know exactly who is in your warehouse at all times.
  • Employee wages. Preventing worker theft is a huge problem in some warehouses. All that stock lying around is too tempting for some people. Implementing tight rules and detection gates at the edge of your premises is one approach to reducing this kind of crime, but the most effective solution is to pay your staff well and make them feel like they have a stake in the company.
  • Surveillance equipment. Put CCTV cameras where they can get good coverage. Almost as important is to put them where they can be seen. Cameras act as an effective deterrent to casual criminals.
  • Security guard. A single night-watchman is not going to foil an organised criminal conspiracy to burgle your warehouse and may well just draw attention to the fact that you have something valuable in there. The money is better spent on properly securing access points.
  • Upgrade your door. If you want to move a large amount of stock in or out of a warehouse the most effective way to do it is to use the door. A modern secure warehouse door can be locked closed when the warehouse is not in use, preventing the removal of items.
