The History of PVC

The original polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was accidentally synthesised by Eugen Baumann in 1872. The hard, brittle, white plastic was assumed to be useless until an American company developed a method of plasticising it – by the addition of additives two forms of useful PVC (rigid and flexible) could be obtained. Our strip doors are made from flexible PVC.

The Qualities of PVC

The modern PVC is a material that features the following qualities that make it especially suitable for use in industry:

• Strong. PVC is lightweight, but also strong.
  
• Fire-retardant. Usefully, some of the additives that make PVC flexible also make it flame-retardant.
  
• Chemical-resistant. Many alkalis, acids and salts cannot stain or damage PVC
  
• U.V. resistant. Natural sunlight resistance means that PVC is slower to degrade than some other plastics when exposed to U.V. 
  
• Durable. Its strength and properties of resistance give PVC a longer lifespan than some other plastics.
  
• Non-toxic. PVC meets health and safety standards for non-toxicity.
